``... it seems clear that nearly all lawmakers in California are hopelessly out of touch with reality these days, many of them likely viewing the recent economic downturn as being just a temporary setback in what is seen as a birthright of ever-rising real estate prices, the absence of which makes the state, basically, ungovernable.''

There is a real danger to the country if California doesn't get it's act together. A default, which is very possible, would start the financial landslide slipping again nationwide & then worldwide. The problem is over dependence on income tax revenue, bloated public assistance (people come from all across the country & Mexico just to ride the gravy train) & unrealistic expectations by Californians about what is possible for government to do for them. The final nail in the coffin is the impossible 2/3rds majority needed to pass the budget. That is what really makes the state ungovernable. I think the state should go to a 3/5ths majority instead. The minority party's views would be respected (CURRENTLY the Republicans) but they wouldn't be able to easily block the state from running it's business. That would be true reform. Permalink
