"So how many "homeowner rescue" and "foreclosure prevention" programs are out there these days? The government has launched a veritable flotilla of rescue programs, all which seem to sink before making it out of the harbor. There are a number of reasons these programs have failed, but in large part they have failed because homeowners are not interested in being "rescued"."

This is my chance to offer my standard rant on stick built versus manufactured housing. Stick built housing is obsolete. It is the only major industry still using 1800's technology. EVERYTHING ELSE IS BUILT IN FACTORIES. If the country really wants a 30K a year waitress or mechanic to have their own home (when stick built houses are 250K & up) the only viable answer is manufactured housing. Manufactured housing is universally zoned out by greedy towns (& their builder buddies) because it means more squeezed out profits for them. The town's building inspectors make lots of revenue by inspecting every nail & board in a house as it goes up & the permits stretch out to infinity. Manufactured housing is already a great value even though it is driven out & marginalized everywhere. If it were treated fairly economies of scale would kick in & everyone who wanted one could have a house. Stick built homes would become luxury items for the rich (as they should be). Construction workers would have to adapt but their opportunities would actually increase. Only politics is keeping manufactured housing from providing every American with a cheap, comfortable, attractive home. Permalink
