Endless late show jokes aside, Spitzer's transgression itself is ho-hum. It didn't involve public funds. It is business between him and his family.

As both of the above writers point out, it looks pretty suspicious that Spitzer's name was openly leaked in an ongoing investigation and that he was politically thrown under the bus for a very private impropriety (in contrast to political figures who are otherwise in favor with the power structure). Half of DC is probably patronizing outfits like Emperor's, if not sleeping with lobbyists and partaking in a general orgy of conflicting interests.
