Hutchinson points out that so-called "fair value accounting" has been used cynically, to quickly mark gains to market (so as to earn immediate executive payouts), but then squirrel losses away in the never-neverland of "level 3 assets"... to arrive later at the feet of shareholders as an "unanticipated disaster".
