The U.S. Attorney's Office in Detroit said it has charged 28 people since March in a crackdown on mortgage fraud.

The charges grew out of 15 cases that caused $50 million in losses, mainly to financial institutions, U.S. Attorney Stephen Murphy said at a news conference in Detroit.

Two cases in eastern Michigan accounted for some $40 million of the region's losses.
