In the first ruling of its kind, a bankruptcy judge held the city of Vallejo, Calif. has the authority to void its existing union contracts in its effort to reorganize, holding public workers do not enjoy the same protections Congress gave union workers at private companies. Like, duh. What's the point of having an agreement you will be paid some amount of money, if the money's not there to pay it? I know everyone thinks its a horrible disaster for contract law if union contracts or mortgages can get busted by bankruptcy judges, but what other option is there?
