The truth is that only a fraction of the gains they were describing consisted of Treasury securities. The Fed does not even break out Treasury securities holdings in the data it reports in the weekly H8 report for the commercial banking system. Since 2009, the Fed has reported a category--Treasury and Agency securities, Non-MBS, which includes Treasury securities, but does not reveal what portion is actually Treasury securities.
