The press is quick to give watered down information to the public. They scream, Dow reaches new record! However, adjusting for inflation the Dow is down by 11 percent from where it was in 2000. Also, the Dow is a poor index of the economy since it only tracks 30 companies. It also get rearranged by a "committee" that took out AIG, GM, and Citigroup only a few years ago. A better index would be the S&P 500 and this is down by 26 percent from 2000 adjusting for inflation
