In this post, regular Implode-o-Meter investigative journalistic contributor Teri Buhl recounts her ongoing battle against the the New Canaan authorities for daring to push a story about the local hedgies' "scandal on the homefront" -- flouting the law and systematically hosting under-age drinking parties and generally turning a blind eye to the risky and illegal behavior of their privileged progeny. For investigating this and raising the issue of this blatant violation of the law and, frankly, social double standard, Buhl was railroaded in a kangaroo court criminal case for "harassment" and "breach of the peace". Of course, this all had the effect of silencing the independent press and quelling criticism of a privileged group who, especially in a place like New Canaan, CT, basically "own the place." The conviction (for which Buhl is, and always has been, free on bond) is almost certain to be reversed on appeal. However, the chilling effect has certainly been achieved. We here at ML-Implode have repeatedly encountered just as severe "SLAPP" attacks (though in the form of "libel" suits) and understand keenly the threat they present to the free press and freedom of speech, as well the life and well being of those attempting to speak out and being attacked.
