``ON NOVEMBER 14th Greece received a welcome surprise. Revised GDP figures showed that it had emerged from recession earlier this year, growing for each of the first three quarters (on a quarterly basis). The wounds of its lengthy contraction will not soon heal, however. Since the second quarter of 2008, its economy has shrunk by about a quarter. ''
