U.S. inflation appears to be firming as housing and medical costs rise while the effects of low energy prices and a strong dollar slowly fade.

The consumer-price index, which measures what Americans pay for everything from shelter to sweets, increased a seasonally adjusted 0.2% in June from the prior month, the Labor Department said Friday. It had climbed 0.2% in May and 0.4% in April.

While the monthly figures remain fairly tame, the broader trend suggest prices gains are accelerating in some key categories, especially services. Prices excluding food and energy climbed 2.3% from a year earlier, matching the highest level since May 2012.
