I have another theory, and that is that the old populists actually won. This is their financial system. They had demanded paper money, federally insured bank deposits and a heavy governmental hand in the distribution of credit, and now they have them. The Populist Party might have lost the elections in the hard times of the 1890s. But it won the future.

This is a must-read editorial from Jim Grant.

Unbelievable; as commercial and investment banks crash around us, this running dog of Wall Street imperialism actually blames the old populist movement that created the government agencies doing the bank bailouts. Why no outrage? Because three successive Republican administrations ave worked very hard, using the old panem et circenses trick and rich lurkers like Dick Cheney and Rupert Murdoch, to make the American public fat, stupid, barefoot and pregnant. Fox News is actually using the performance of healthy tech stocks to lull us into believing everything's okey-dokey while ignoring all bad news as banks skate on the event horizon of oblivion. No, there's no outrage now; thanks to our corporate masters, we simply don't know what's going on, and we're too gluttonous and slothful to care. There will be outrage, however, of a very noticeable kind, when the bread and circuses go away. Permalink
